Power Genius BESS Project in Bulgaria: A Benchmark for PV Self-Consumption and Arbitrage

Sep 11, 2026
We are thrilled to showcase our latest flagship project in Bulgaria, where Power Genius has successfully deployed a 1 MW / 2,088 kWh BESS alongside an 897 kWp PV system. By leveraging the GS125-261LS liquid-cooled cabinets, this facility is now mastering the art of PV-plus-storage synergy.

As Europe accelerates its energy transition, Bulgaria has witnessed an explosive surge in solar PV installations. However, this rapid adoption has exposed a structural mismatch: peak solar generation typically coincides with midday hours when electricity prices are at their lowest, while demand and premium pricing occur during the evening and night. This temporal disconnect leaves many industrial facilities with rooftop PV facing the dilemma of curtailment or selling power at rock-bottom prices.

To address this, a Bulgarian manufacturing plant deployed the integrated Power Genius PV-plus-storage solution. Building on its existing 897 kWp solar array, the facility added a 1 MW / 2,088 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This strategic upgrade enables seamless PV-storage coordination, unlocking an optimal revenue model for energy management.

System Architecture: High Energy Density Meets Flexible Design

The project features eight Power Genius GS125-261LS high-performance battery cabinets, delivering a total capacity of 2,088 kWh. The system architecture was meticulously engineered to balance site constraints with economic viability:

LV Interconnection, HV Metering: Both the PV and BESS integrate seamlessly at the 400V low-voltage level, while primary metering and control are managed at the 20kV medium-voltage side. This design simplifies grid interconnection while ensuring precise energy orchestration across the entire facility.

Modular Scalability: The parallel modular setup minimizes the physical footprint, making it ideal for space-constrained outdoor areas. It also provides ample headroom for future capacity expansion.

Market Dynamics: Capitalizing on Price Spreads

The projects commercial viability is anchored in Bulgarias unique electricity pricing structure. An analysis of the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) day-ahead market reveals significant arbitrage opportunities:

Midday Price Troughs: Between 10:00 and 16:00, massive solar influx drives market prices to daily lows, often hovering around 130/MWh. This creates a prime charging window for the BESS, allowing it to absorb solar power at near-zero marginal cost.

Evening Price Peaks: As solar generation drops to zero post-sunset (17:0021:00), residential and industrial demand pushes prices above 220/MWh. With intraday spreads exceeding 100/MWh, the BESS can charge during low-price windows and discharge during peak hours, generating substantial arbitrage revenue.

Operational Validation: Visualizing PV-Storage Synergy

Long-term monitoring of power curvesincluding PV output, grid exchange, and load consumptionhas validated the system's exceptional flexibility:

Maximized Self-Consumption & Peak Shaving: During peak solar hours, PV generation significantly exceeds on-site load. Instead of exporting excess power to the grid at low prices, the BESS absorbs the surplus at full capacity, keeping grid export flat or slightly positive.

Valley Filling & Load Support: After sunset, as PV output drops to zero, the BESS seamlessly discharges to meet ongoing factory demand. This prevents a sharp spike in grid imports during expensive evening hours, effectively shielding the facility from high electricity tariffs.

Dynamic Energy Management: Whether under clear skies or fluctuating cloud cover, the system continuously adapts its charge/discharge strategy based on real-time pricing and load profiles, ensuring every kilowatt-hour is utilized for maximum value.

Conclusion

Power Geniusproject in Bulgaria stands as a flagship case study for the "PV-plus-storage" joint dispatch model in Europe. It not only resolves the curtailment challenges associated with high PV penetration but also transforms BESS from a mere backup power source into a high-yield revenue-generating asset through precise arbitrage.

As the energy storage market surges across Bulgaria and the broader Eastern European region, Power Genius continues to leverage its technological edge and flexible solutions, accelerating the green transition and energy independence for commercial and industrial clients worldwide.
